5. Penetrant Testing (PT)

Penetrant Testing (PT), also called Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI) or Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to locate surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics). For applications where a greater sensitivity to smaller defects is required, the fluorescent penetrant method is preferred.

The Penetrant may be applied to all non-ferrous materials and ferrous materials, but for inspection of ferrous components magnetic-particle inspection may be preferred for its subsurface detection capability. Commonly, DPI is used to detect cracks, surface porosity, lack of penetration in welds and defects resulting from in-service conditions (e.g., fatigue cracks of components or welds) in castings, forgings, and welding surface defects.

PCN Level 1 & 2

This course is designed to provide the participants, a better understanding about theory and application of penetrant inspection in welds, to train them and qualify them as PCN Level I or II in penetrant testing.

PCN Level 3

This guidance course is aimed at the PCN Level 3 requirements for Penetrant Testing practitioners. The main objective of the course is to make candidates fully aware of the scope of the examination and level of knowledge required. It will also enable candidates to identify their weak subject areas. Advice will be given on any further tuition required.

Note-1: For Level 2 certification, the intent is that work experience consists of time as a Level 1. If the individual is being qualified directly to Level 2, with no time at Level 1, the experience shall consist of the sum of the times required for Level 1 and Level 2. No reduction in the period of experience shall be allowed

Note-2: Industrial NDT experience in the appropriate sector may be acquired either prior to or following success in the qualification examination.

• PSL 30- Log of Experience
• PSL 44-Vision Requirements (which has to be certified by a registered medical practitioner)
• CP-27 code of ethics
• PCN ID (wallet or e-certificate) -only for existing PCN certificate holders
• PCN UT level I/II Certificate copy
• One govt approved identity card (example: Passport/voter ID /Aadhaar Card)
